The system gauges provide real time feedback of relevant information so you can observe the effects of various changes. This README file contains the latest information for the Intel Desktop Control Center v4.1.0 beta release software application. You must be logged in as an administrator before you run Intel Desktop Control Center. ====================== 2. System Requirements ====================== Hardware Requirements --------------------- The Intel Desktop Control Center v4.1.0 beta supports both Intel(R) Desktop Board DX38BT and DX48BT2. Earlier Intel Extreme Edition desktop boards, such as the Intel(R) Desktop Board D975XBX and D975XBX2 are NOT supported. A video graphics card with hardware-based support for Microsoft* DirectX* 10 is highly recommended. CPU overclocking features are only available with Intel(R) Extreme Edition processors. Intel Desktop Control Center v4.1.0 beta will run on non-Extreme Edition processors, but the CPU overclocking features will not be enabled. Operating System ---------------- Intel Desktop Control Center software should be installed only on systems based on Intel Desktop Boards with one of the following operating systems: - Microsoft Windows* Vista* operating systems (32-bit and 64-bit) for Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, and Enterprise. - Microsoft Windows XP Professional (32-bit and 64-bit) and Home Edition with Service Pack 2 and up. - Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition (MCE) operating system with Update Rollup 2. Note: If your system has other applications running that could prevent a system reboot, please close those applications before starting an installation to protect yourself from loss of any unsaved data. Note: The Windows Vista Starter Edition is not supported. Earlier operating system versions of Windows 95, 98, 98 SE, NT, 2000, ME, and Server 2003 are not supported. Note: Computers based on the Microsoft Windows XP operating system also require installation of the Microsoft .NET Framework Version 3.0 Redistribution Package software or later. If any of these items are missing, SETUP.EXE will automatically download and install them if the PC is connected to the internet. Note: The Intel(R) Desktop Control Center v4.1.0 is not backwards compatible with any previous versions of Intel Desktop Control Center. Note: Intel Desktop Control Center v4.1.0.128 beta is the first build that fully supports 64-bit operating systems. BIOS Requirements ----------------- Make sure you have BIOS BT1554 or newer installed. If you're not sure what BIOS version is installed, restart the PC and press F2 to enter the BIOS setup. The BIOS version will be displayed. BIOS BT1554 is noted as follows: BTX3810J.86A.1554.2008.xxxx.xxxx. If you don't have BIOS BT1554 installed, you can download it here: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/default.aspx (search on "1554") Display Configuration --------------------- The minimum supported display configuration is 1024 x 768 pixels with 16-bit color or higher. Available Addressable System Memory ----------------------------------- System resources and hardware (such as PCI and PCI Express*) require physical memory address locations that can reduce available addressable system memory. This could result in a reduction of as much as 1 GB or more of physical addressable memory being available to the operating system and applications, depending on the system configuration and operating system. ============================= 3. Known Issues and Solutions ============================= After installing Intel Desktop Control Center 4.1.0, if you encounter issues that are not documented below, please send an email to idccfeedback@intel.com and attach the following file: C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTEL\INTEL(R) DESKTOP CONTROL CENTER\LOGS\IDCC.LOG (for 32-bit OS) C:\PROGRAM FILES(x86)\INTEL\INTEL(R) DESKTOP CONTROL CENTER\LOGS\IDCC.LOG (for 64-bit OS) and include a screen shot of the error message. Please also include your BIOS version, OS version (Windows XP or Windows Vista; 32- or 64-bit), and OS language. - ISSUE: When the value is set below 1 GHz, the CPU speed does not display correctly on the main console. STATUS: Will be fixed in a future release. - ISSUE: The dropdown boxes in all the palettes display behind the related palette. WORKAROUND: Restart the computer. - ISSUE: During uninstall, Intel Desktop Control Center reports an error when .NET is manually uninstalled via the control panel. WORKAROUND: Install .NET 3.0 (or greater) to uninstall Intel Desktop Control Center. - ISSUE: Intel Desktop Control Center beta versions 4.0.0.8 through 4.1.0.128 do not always install into the exact same folder. As a result, it is possible to have more than one beta version installed on the PC at once (for example, v4.0.0.9 and v4.1.0.25 install into different folders). Such a condition does NOT work, as common registry entries get overwritten and the Intel Desktop Control Center will NOT operate correctly under this condition. SOLUTION: Uninstall the Intel Desktop Control Center and delete all Intel Desktop Control Center folders from the C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTEL directory. - ISSUE: When you remove or repair a program in Microsoft Windows Vista, you may receive the following notification message in the User Account Control dialog box: "An unidentified program wants to access your computer." WORKAROUND: Click Allow in the User Account Control dialog box to continue. - ISSUE: Fans may stop spinning and fan speed monitoring may become unreliable when duty cycle is set to lower than 43%. STATUS: Will not fix. This is a limitation of the voltage variance and pulse modulation methods of fan speed control. - ISSUE: The MCH fan does not appear in Intel Desktop Control Center. STATUS: Will not fix. The MCH fan header cannot be controlled or monitored on the Intel Desktop Board DX38BT. Any fan connected to this header will run at 100% duty cycle. - ISSUE: When manually adjusting processor, memory, and bus settings, the system will unexpectedly reboot if values are selected that exceed the stable limitations of the installed hardware. WORKAROUND: Manually adjust settings one value at a time to minimize the frequency of this issue. - ISSUE: Average processor utilization may exceed 10% when the Intel Desktop Control Center is installed on Microsoft Windows Vista and the application is open and the PC is sitting idle. WORKAROUND: The CPU utilization may be reduced by doing one or more of the following things: - Upgrade to Microsoft Vista Service Pack 1 - Replace the video graphics card with a model that supports Microsoft* DirectX* 10 in hardware. - Disable the "aero" effect in Windows Vista: START > CONTROL PANEL > SYSTEM AND MAINTENANCE > PERFORMANCE INFORMATION AND TOOLS > ADVANCED TOOLS > ADJUST THE APPEARANCE AND PERFORMANCE OF WINDOWS and then select ADJUST FOR BEST PERFORMANCE > OK - ISSUE: When launching Intel Desktop Control Center right after a system reboot, the application may take 90+ seconds to load under Microsoft Windows Vista. WORKAROUND: Upgrading to Windows Vista Service Pack 1 reduces this time from 90+ seconds to ~15 seconds. - ISSUE: The Intel Desktop Control Center console may take up to two minutes to appear after double-clicking the desktop icon when Intel(R) Desktop Utilities is installed. STATUS: Under investigation. NOTE: after the two minute startup delay, both applications will run simultaneously. WORKAROUND: Uninstall Intel Desktop Utilities. - ISSUE: Changes to the Host Clock Frequency do not take effect until the PC is rebooted. This also causes the CPU speed to remain unchanged on the console until the PC is rebooted. STATUS: Will fix in a future release. WORKAROUND: Reboot the PC after changing the Host Clock Frequency. - ISSUE: The CPU temperature gauge moves toward the red color as numeric temperature decreases. STATUS: Works as designed. Some Intel(R) processors report a relative rather than absolute temperature. These CPUs are auto-detected by the Intel Desktop Control Center and the CPU temperature gauge displays a "T" next to the numeric value instead of "C" for Celsius or "F" for Fahrenheit. "T" stands for "thermal margin" and represents a relative temperature value that indicates the number of degrees the CPU has before it takes the matter into its own control (Thermal Control Circuit, see processor Thermal & Mechanical Design Guideline for more information) and reduces its performance/power to prevent overheating. This point where performance needs to be reduced is arbitrarily assigned the value of zero degrees. The farther away from zero, the cooler the processor is running. For example, a reading of 4 degrees T means the processor is only 4 degrees away from the point of reducing performance to prevent thermal damage (critical situation). A reading of 50 degrees T indicates 50 degrees of thermal margin before the processor needs to reduce performance (safe situation). When temperature is displayed in thermal margin units, higher numbers are better in terms of processor health. ============================= 4.
